Biography


Paul GaNun was born on September 25, 1948.  His home of record is Asbury Park, NJ.  He had a sister, Lynn, and a brother, Gary.  He graduated from Neptune High School in 1967.  While growing up, Paul was interested in sports, including wrestling, baseball, swimming and football.    He collected stamps and enjoyed music.  He was a member of the Boy Scouts and the United Methodist Church. 

GaNun was drafted into the US Army.  He served as a Combat Medic with the 101st Airborne, attaining the rank of Corporal (CPL). 

On May 18, 1969, C Company was on combat operations in the vicinity of Tam Ky when they began receiving enemy small arms fire.  GaNun continually exposed himself while giving aid to the wounded.  Finally, while trying to reach another wounded man, Paul received a gunshot wound to the chest at 5:30 PM.  He died that day on Hamburger Hill in South Vietnam while aiding the wounded.

GaNun was awarded the Combat Medic Badge, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, Air Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
