Biography


Marion Marshall Hopkins was born on May 25, 1947, to Laurie and Bessie Hopkins in Maysville, SC. He was one of ten children and the youngest of six boys. Everyone called him Marshall. He liked to be called by that name. He was raised on a farm in South Carolina, where he started working at an early age. He was the type of person you would like after meeting him one time. He liked joking around and teasing. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and watching baseball.

Hopkins moved to New Brunswick, NJ, to work for E.R. Squibb & Son. He entered the US Marine Corps in January 1965. His home of record is New Brunswick, NJ. He was to be married upon his return from Vietnam. He served with US Marine Corps 3rd Battalion and attained the rank of Corporal (CPL).

Hopkins was killed in action on October 4, 1967, only one month before he was scheduled to return home. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. Marion was buried in Florence National Cemetery in Florence, SC.
