Biography


Robert J. Dougherty was born on August 7, 1947, in Philadelphia, PA.  His parents, Raymond and Mary, moved to Hammonton, NJ, when Robert was five.  His home of record is Hammonton, NJ.  He attended St. Joseph Grammar School and St. Joseph's High School in Hammonton. 

Dougherty entered the US Army.  He completed his basic training at Fort Dix, NJ, photographic training at Fort Monmouth, NJ, and advanced infantry training at Fort Jackson, SC.  He attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC).  Robert was assigned to 1st Platoon, B Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in An Khe.

Before leaving for Vietnam on May 26, 1967, Robert was able to spend ten days at home with his family. 

Dougherty was killed in action less then one month after his arrival in Vietnam on June 21, 1967, in Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam.

Robert Dougherty is buried in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Hammonton, NJ.

Robert's older brother, Raymond, also served in Vietnam.  Robert is survived by his brother, Raymond, and his younger brother, John.
