Biography


John William Mendez was born May 9, 1948, to Jeremiah and Anna Mendez. At the age of 10, his family moved to Maywood, NJ. His home of record is Maywood, NJ. John had two brothers, Arthur and Richard. He enjoyed basketball, baseball and especially football. He loved fishing and swimming at the Jersey Shore. After graduating Bogota High School in 1966, he worked as a welding apprentice in Hackensack, NJ.

Mendez entered the US Army on September 21, 1967, and attained the rank of Sergeant (SGT). He was assigned to Vietnam with B Company, 502nd Battalion, 101st Airborne.

On February 13, 1969, at the age of 20, Mendez was killed in action.

He was awarded the Bronze Star with V for Valor, two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, and the Army Commendation Medal.

John was very popular with his peers. Always ready to help a less fortunate person. He worked hard and was very kind and thoughtful. Always smiling and happy.

He died a hero, helping his buddies get away from the enemy and was recognized for his bravery at a ceremony at Fort Monmouth in July 1969.
