Biography

Louis Cancian Grovewas born February 15, 1947, in Florida.  His home of record is Clifton, NJ.  His father was a retired Master Sergeant in the Air Force.  Louis attended Sacred Heart School, graduated in 1961, and wrote of his ambition to be a Navy pilot.  He enrolled in Pope Pius XII High School and played on the football team.  Although he was scheduled to graduate, Louis gravitated away from schoolwork and left before graduation.  A fellow classmate remembers Louie as just "...a regular guy, easy to get along with."

Grove took a truck driving job before the draft caught up with him.  He entered the US Army in September 1966.  He attained the rank of Specialist 4 (SP4).  During his first year of training, Louis got married and received his orders for Vietnam.   He arrived in Vietnam in August 1967.  At this time, his brother, John, Jr. was a sailor serving on the USS Shangri-La in the Mediterranean.

On January 30, 1968, Grove, while serving with the US Army in the Kontum area, Central Highlands, Vietnam, was killed by mortar fire.  This was the first day of the Tet Offensive.

He was two weeks short of his 21st birthday and was married for a total of five months.

Grove is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Paterson, NJ, in lot 22, grave 445.
