Biography


Ernest W. Smith was born on April 20, 1946, in Valentine, NE.  His home of record is Belvidere, NJ.   He attended Central School in Vienna, NJ, and Hackettstown High School in Hackettstown, NJ.

He was drafted into the US Army and attained the rank of Specialist 4 (SP4).  He was assigned to C Company, 65th Engineer Battalion, 25th Infantry Division.

Smith was killed in action on April 16, 1968, in Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam.  He died as a result of wounds received from an enemy booby trap that exploded when Smith blew up an enemy bunker.

Smith is buried in the Pequest Cemetery in Hackettstown, NJ.

Some of the many awards and decorations he received include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Military Merit Medal and Gallantry Cross with Palm.
