Biography

Barton Edward Haynes was born on July 19, 1948.  He had three siblings. His home of record is Freehold, NJ.  Barton lived on Center Street, next door to Goldstein's corner store and across the street from the pool room and Calazzo's music store. Before entering the service, Barton was the drummer in Bruce Springsteen's first band, The Castiles.

The Castiles joined the circuit of bands playing teen dances at CYOs, YMCAs, high school gyms, roller rinks and swim clubs, slowly building a following.  However, in April 1966, Bart quit high school and joined the US Marine Corps.

By 1967, Barton was in Vietnam and had attained the rank of Lance Corporal (LCPL).

Haynes was killed in action in Vietnam on October 22, 1967, by mortar fire near Quang Tri, South Vietnam.  Services were arranged by Higgins Memorial Home in Freehold, NJ.  Haynes was buried near a tall shade tree in Beverly National Cemetery in Burlington County near the Delaware River.  An honor guard from Fort Dix was also on hand.
