Biography


William A. Scott was born on December 28, 1928. His home of record is Magnolia, NJ. He is born in West Virginia to William and Lenora Scott. He was the third child, coming after sisters: Nettie and Florence. The family was living in Fayetteville, VA in 1930 in a small, unincorporated town known as Cunard. The Scott family came north and settled in Camden, NJ by the 1940s. William attended Camden High School. He joined the US Army in 1947.

William had been promoted to the rank of Sergeant by the summer of 1953. he was then serving with the 7th Infantry Division in North Korea when on July 8 he was wounded by a rocket. After a brief hospitalization he returned to duty on August 12. His Military Occupational specialty at that time was 01745 Light Weapons Infantry Leader. A career soldier, William had been promoted to the rank of Sergeant First Class by 1967. His military occupation specialty (MOS) is listed as 11F4P Infantry Operations and Intelligence Specialist. He served in the Headquarters Company, Fourth Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade.

Scott was killed in action on July 10, 1967 by small arms fire in Kontum Province in Vietnam. He is buried in the Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly, New Jersey in Section P, Plot 52B on July 21, 1967. He was awarded the Purple Heart with the Oak Leaf Cluster. He was survived by his wife, Pearl Scott, his parents, who had moved to Magnolia, NJ, and his two sisters.
