Biography


Jules T. Girtanner was born on June 9, 1935.  He had two sisters, Carol and June.  He attended Somerville High School, graduating in 1954.

Girtanner served in the US Army and attained the rank of Specialist 4 (SP4).   His home of record is Neshanic, NJ.  He served in the US Army for twelve years and was stationed in Korea and Germany before going to Vietnam.  He served as a Green Beret with the 5th Special Forces Group for nine months in Vietnam. 

Girtanner was killed in action on August 26, 1966.  He was buried with military honors at Raleigh National Cemetery in North Carolina.  He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. 

Girtanner was survived by his wife, Catherine, and a daughter, Lori-Ann, as well as his parents and two sisters.
