His father had been killed in World War II, but James I. Schlinger joined the Army all the same. He enlisted in 1956 at 19, and began the peripatetic life of the career officer--Fort Stills, Okla, Fort Devens, Mass. (Soldier of the Month 1964); Germany, Vietnam.

In July 1968, Schlinger was given one of the Vietnam soldier's most perilous assignments--flying a helicopter in the war zone. Four months later, on November 2, he was killed in action.
