Biography
James I. Schlinger was born on September 14, 1937. His home of record is New Bedford, NJ.
He served in the US Army and attained the rank of Warrant Officer (WO). Schlinger was a helicopter pilot.
Schlinger was killed in action on November 2, 1968. His wife, Helga, and two daughters survived him. He is buried at Houston National Cemetery in Texas.
The following is an excerpt about James Schlinger from The Record dated Monday, January 29, 1973:
His father had been killed in World War II, but James I. Schlinger joined the Army all the same. He enlisted in 1956 at 19, and began the peripatetic life of the career officer--Fort Stills, Okla, Fort Devens, Mass. (Soldier of the Month 1964); Germany, Vietnam.
In July 1968, Schlinger was given one of the Vietnam soldier's most perilous assignments--flying a helicopter in the war zone. Four months later, on November 2, he was killed in action.
