Biography

Harry F. Conrad was born on March 17, 1945, to William and Elsie Conrad.  His home of record is Hackettstown, NJ.  He was the fifth child of eleven children.

He served in the US Army and attained the rank of Specialist 4 (SP4).  He was assigned to B Company, 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 199th Light Infantry Brigade.  The 199th is known as "the Redcatchers".  He served as a radio-telephone operator.

Conrad was killed in action on March 14, 1967, when his Company was ambushed while crossing an irrigation canal on rafts while on patrol.  The Company was mid-canal when the enemy opened fire.  Seven men died during this attack - three by gunshot and four by drowning due to the weight of their gear.  Conrad carried a 20 pound backpack radio in addition to his other gear.

Conrad is buried in Newton, NJ.
