Biography


Daniel W. Daley was born on October 19, 1947, to William and Rita Daley.  His home of record is Elizabeth, NJ.  He had one sister, Catherine Anne, and a brother, Thomas.  He was a lifelong resident of Elizabeth and attended St. Mary's Grammar School and High School, graduating in 1965.   He attended Union County College for one year.  Daniel liked basketball and music.

He worked as a clerk at Supermarket Service, a division of APL Corp. in Linden, NJ, until he was drafted on September 13, 1967.

Daniel served in the US Army and completed his basic training at Fort Dix, NJ.  He volunteered for airborne duty and was sent to Fort Benning, GA, for paratrooper training.  He was then sent to Vietnam with Company A, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 502nd Infantry, 101st Army Airborne Division.  He attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC). 

Daley was killed in action on May 1, 1968, from wounds received while on a combat operation.  He was hit by fragments from hostile anti-tank round.

He is buried in Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly, NJ.

Daniel was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, the Combat Infantryman Badge and Expert Badge with machine gun and rifle bars.
