Biography


John H. Neal, Jr. was born on March 4, 1946.  His home of record is Jersey City, NJ.  He had one brother, Gary. 

He served in the US Marine Corps and attained the rank of Corporal (CPL). He was assigned to 3rd Platoon, H Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division.

On January 24, 1968, the 64th NVA Regiment ambushed a truck convoy moving west from Dong Ha toward Camp Carroll on Route 9.  The Marines at Camp Carroll launched a reaction force consisting of two tanks, two M42 "Dusters", and an infantry platoon from Hotel 2/9 Marines.  The reaction force, which Neal was part of, was hit by the 64th NVA Regiment.  Neal was killed in action. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Jersey City.
