Biography

Francis J. Mayer, Jr. was born on May 19, 1948, in Perth Amboy, NJ. His home of record is West Long Branch, NJ.  He attended Sea Bright Elementary School and graduated from Shore Regional High School in 1967.  He was nicknamed "Satch" by his schoolmates and is still remembered today for his wonderful sense of humor. Francis had an affinity for working with his hands and especially enjoyed his shop classes.  He was thinking of opening a carpentry business after his stint in the military was over.

Mayer served in the US Marine Corps and attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC).  His tour of duty in Vietnam began on December 18, 1967.

Mayer was killed in action on January 31, 1968, when he was hit with a fragmentation device while he was on patrol in Thua Thien, Vietnam.  He served with the 1st Platoon, H Company, 5th Marines, 2nd Division.

Mayer was survived by his parents, and two sisters, Jane and Lois Ann.  Upon notification of Mayer's death, Mayor Shaheen requested that flags in the town of West Long Branch be flown at half-mast and he extended his condolences to the family.  A plaque honoring Mayer and other soldiers killed in action can be found in the vestibule of Shore Regional High School in West Long Branch, NJ.
