Biography
Jay J. Schmid was born on January 22, 1943. His home of record is Ridgewood, NJ. After graduating from Ridgewood High Schoolin 1960, Jay attended Gettysburg College, majoring in engineering. He continued his education at FairleighDickinson University where he majored in industrial management. While in college, he took a job as a chemistwith Julius Schmid Inc., a company founded by one of Jay’s relatives.
He was drafted into the US Army in September 1967, andattained the rank of Sergeant (SGT).He trained at Fort Polk, LA and FortBenning before being sent to Vietnam in 1968 with the 27th InfantryBattalion (Wolfhounds), 25th Division.
He was survived by his mother and sister.
Schmid was killed in action on December 7, 1968. He wasawarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, VietnamCampaign Ribbon, Expert Rifle Bar and the Sharpshooter Badge with machine gunbar. He was also awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, Bronze Star,Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge, allposthumously.
He is buried in Section C, Plot 1 in the New Paltz RuralCemetery, New Paltz, New York.
