Joseph Leonard Hesson III was born on February 22, 1949, to Joseph and Dolores Hesson.  His home of record is Pennsauken, NJ.  He had one sister, Dolores.  Joseph graduated from Camden County Vocational School in June 1967.  He enjoyed electronics, swimming and track.  Joseph attended Camden County College for a year before entering the service.

Hesson joined the US Marine Corps in 1968, where he attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC). 

Hesson was killed in action on August 10, 1969, in South Vietnam.
