NJ Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Foundation
Annual Interdisciplinary Forum on the Vietnam Era
In the fall of each year, the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans‘ Memorial Foundation presents an all-day, multi-speaker, Interdisciplinary Forum on the Vietnam Era, held at the Robert B. Meyner Reception Center located nearby the Vietnam Era Museum & Educational Center.
The Forum is open to the general public but is designed, particularly, with teachers in mind, offering workshop-style sessions with ideas and information for bringing to the classroom the lessons and legacies of the Vietnam era. Teachers should note that we are a registered New Jersey Professional Development Provider, and Forum attendance qualifies them for necessary Professional Development credit hours.

It is impossible to read the newspaper today and not see headlines comparing Vietnam to Iraq or Afghanistan. Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan share similarities: insurgency, an unknown enemy, difficult environmental conditions, but much has changed from one conflict to the next. This year’s Forum will highlight the changing trends of the people who served in terms of their gender, generation, and voluntary or involuntary participation. The Forum will provide educators the important scholarly and experience-based educational tools to build a foundation to teaching the past to help inform their students about the present.
Forum includes:
Keynote speaker, Dr. Marianna P. Sullivan
Dr. Sullivan is a Professor of Political Science and International Studies at The College of New Jersey. Dr. Sullivan’s current research project has the working title, Contested Memories and Confused Analogies: Vietnam, Iraq and American Foreign Policy.
Panels:
- Gender: Hear the accounts of a Vietnam army nurse, female Iraq veteran, and author of oral histories from female Iraq veterans.
- Generational Serving: Compare and contrast soldiers’ experiences from Vietnam to Iraq through the eyes of a father and son within historical context provided by a West Point professor.
- The Draft: Take a position on the draft after hearing from a historian, a Vietnam veteran draftee, and Rutgers professor who served in Afghanistan.
